Balance Protection — Prevent Declined Payments
On this page
Let incoming funds that haven't settled yet cover outgoing payments like payroll — for a small fee — so nothing gets declined over bad timing.
About Balance Protection
Balance Protection covers outgoing payments — like payroll — when the shortfall is made up of funds you already have coming in that simply haven't settled yet. It only steps in if that balance is available, just not settled; it does not advance funds against money you're merely expecting or haven't received at all. When it steps in, Truss charges a 1% fee on the amount covered, and repays itself automatically once the incoming funds settle.
Check Settings → Balance Protection to see your coverage limit (see Reading the Balance Protection screen below).
Example transaction
The figures below are illustrative — check Settings → Balance Protection for your own coverage limit (see Reading the Balance Protection screen below).
You have $15,000 already showing as available in your account, but it hasn't settled yet — and you need to run $12,000 in payroll today. With Balance Protection turned on, you get automatic access to the $12,000 you need — payroll goes out on time, and you pay a $120 fee (1% of the $12,000 covered). Once the $15,000 settles, Truss repays itself automatically. No action needed on your end.
Turn on Balance Protection
- Go to Settings.
- Select Balance Protection from the settings list.
- Review the coverage amount and fee, then switch the Balance Protection toggle on.

Reading the Balance Protection screen
Once enabled, the Balance Protection screen shows a dollar amount front and center. Check Settings → Balance Protection to see your own coverage limit.
⚠️ This number is a coverage limit, not your balance
The amount shown on the Balance Protection screen is the maximum Truss will cover — not your current account balance. It only comes into play when you already have available funds that haven't settled yet and a payment would otherwise fail; Truss does not front money against funds you haven't received or aren't yet showing as available. The 1% fee only applies to the amount actually covered.
On this screen:
- The dollar figure next to "Unsettled funds covered for a 1% fee" — the cap on how much Truss will front you against available-but-unsettled funds. Check Settings → Balance Protection for your own number.
- Balance Protection toggle — "On — up to [your coverage limit] covered; 1% fee on covered amounts" confirms the feature is active and restates your limit as a ceiling, not a balance.
Usage & daily limit
The Usage section tracks how much of your daily limit has actually been drawn on:
- Daily limit — the same coverage cap, shown again here as the ceiling for a single day.
- Used — how much of that limit has been tapped to cover payments today (e.g. $0.00 if Balance Protection hasn't needed to step in).
- Remaining — Daily limit minus Used; how much coverage is still available today.
The progress bar fills in as Used increases — it's tracking usage against the limit, not tracking your account balance.
Balance Protection applies to Truss-initiated outgoing payments
Balance Protection covers payments Truss sends on your behalf, such as payroll runs and vendor bills, when settled funds fall short. It does not apply to written checks — a paper check you've written can still be returned if funds aren't available when it's presented.
