Guest Checkout — Let Customers Pay Without a Truss Account
On this page
Your customers can now pay a Truss invoice without signing up, logging in, or verifying a code. Here are the three ways to get the pay link to them, and what they see when they pay.
What guest checkout changes
Before guest checkout, a customer opening a Truss invoice had to create an account or verify a code before they could pay. That step is gone. Anyone with the link to one of your invoices can open it and pay right away, with no sign-up, no password, and no verification code.
Nothing about how you create invoices changes. Guest checkout is what happens on the other end when your customer clicks through, and it works the same on phone, tablet, and desktop.
1. Send the invoice from Truss
The simplest path, and the one to use by default. Create the invoice as you normally would, choose Email, Text message, or both under Send via, and click Send.
Truss sends the notification with the pay link built in. There is nothing extra for you to send and nothing for your customer to sign up for.
2. Grab the pay link after sending
As soon as the invoice sends, the confirmation screen shows the Pay link with a copy button next to it. Copy it here if you would rather send the invoice yourself, in a text message or an email thread you already have going with that client.
The pay link works like a key Anyone with the link can view the invoice details and pay it without signing in. Send it directly to your customer.
3. Copy the link later from Invoices
Closed the confirmation screen, or your customer misplaced the email? You can pull the link again at any time.
- Go to Payments › Invoices and click the invoice. It opens in the side panel.
- In the action bar at the bottom of the panel, click the link icon, Copy payment link.
- Paste it into a text or an email and send it to your customer.
What your customer sees
However the link reached them, your customer lands on the invoice itself, showing your business name, the amount due, the balance, and your description. No login and no account prompt. They click Pay to continue.
Payment methods and fees
Next they choose how to pay. Every payment includes a platform fee of $0.30 + 3.25%, and the total they see includes it:
- Bank transfer (ACH): we waive the platform fee.
- Credit card: the platform fee stays in the total.
A Split payment toggle lets them pay part by ACH and part by card, with the platform fee waived on the ACH part. The summary on the right updates as they choose, breaking out the subtotal, the card portion, the platform fee, and the total due. Whether the platform fee is paid by you or your customer depends on your settings. See Who Pays the Platform Fee?
Once they confirm, the funds land in your Truss account and the invoice updates to paid. Your customer gets a confirmation at the email they entered.
Invoices created in JobTread
If you build your invoices in JobTread, they connect directly to Truss and your customer still pays through guest checkout. The difference is how the invoice reaches them: JobTread sends it, not Truss.
Your customer gets an email from JobTread with a View Invoice button.
That opens the invoice in JobTread. From there they click Pay Now, which hands them off to Truss guest checkout, exactly as described above.
Troubleshooting
My customer says the pay link doesn't work. The invoice may already be paid or cancelled, or the link may have been broken when it was forwarded. Copy the payment link again from the side panel and send it to your customer.
My customer never got the invoice. The email address or mobile number on the invoice may be incorrect, or an emailed notification may have been filtered into spam. For a JobTread invoice, the notification is sent by JobTread rather than Truss, so it may not look like the message your customer expects. Verify the contact details on the invoice and ask your customer to check their spam folder. You can also send them the payment link directly.
The invoice is not showing up from JobTread. A JobTread invoice comes into Truss once someone clicks Pay Now on it. Confirm the invoice is sent from JobTread, then open it and click Pay Now yourself if your customer hasn't yet.
