Create & Pay a Bill

Create a bill and pay your vendor by payment link, direct deposit or mailed check. Payment link is recommended: your vendor picks how they get paid, with no fee.

Which method should I use?

Use Payment Link. It's the default for every bill. You send the payment, and your vendor chooses how fast they want it: instantly, next business day, or by check. You never handle their bank details, and paying bills in Truss has no fee.

  • Payment Link (recommended): instant to 7 business days, the vendor picks. Use it almost always, especially for new vendors and subs.
  • Direct Deposit (ACH): 0 to 2 business days. Use it only when you have the vendor's routing and account numbers and have confirmed them with the vendor directly.
  • Check Delivery: 5 to 7 business days. Use it when the vendor only takes paper checks.

Why we recommend the payment link: No routing numbers to collect, type or get wrong. Your vendor gets paid the way they want. And once they've linked a payout method, it's remembered for every payment after that.

  1. Go to Bills and click Create bill.
  2. Search for the vendor, or click Add a new vendor and enter their name, email and mobile number.
  3. Enter the amount and a description, then click Save & pay now.

  1. Check Amount to pay. To pay part of the bill, click Edit.
  2. Payment Link is already selected. Click it to see when it lands, then confirm. Nothing sends until you do.

Your vendor gets an email or text with the payment. They accept it and choose how to get paid:

  • Truss account: instant, no fee
  • Bank transfer (ACH): 1 business day, no fee
  • Debit card: instant, 1.75% fee paid by the vendor. The card must be in their own name.
  • Mailed check: 5 to 7 business days, no fee

Your vendor doesn't need a Truss account: They can accept the payment as a guest. Opening a Truss account is optional, but it gets them paid instantly with no fee.

Pay by direct deposit (ACH)

Use this only if you have the vendor's routing and account numbers and have confirmed them with the vendor directly. Truss sends the money straight to those numbers, so the vendor doesn't accept anything.

  1. Follow steps 1 to 4 above.
  2. Under How to pay, choose Direct Deposit - ACH.
  3. Pick a saved deposit account, or click Add deposit account and enter the routing number, account number, account type, counterparty type and account holder name.
  4. Confirm the payment. It arrives in 0 to 2 business days.

Confirm the bank details with your vendor before you pay: Call your vendor on a phone number you've used to talk to them before. Never use a number that came with the bank details, or one you just received in an email, text or invoice. Read the routing and account numbers back to them and make sure the account belongs to the person you mean to pay. Scammers send fake "updated bank info" requests that look real. If you can't confirm, send a payment link instead.

Pay by mailed check

  1. Follow steps 1 to 4 above.
  2. Under How to pay, choose Check Delivery.
  3. Enter or confirm the vendor's mailing address.
  4. Confirm the payment. Truss prints and mails the check. Allow 5 to 7 business days for delivery.

Checks can't be cancelled once mailed: Check the address carefully before you confirm. If your vendor would rather get paid faster, send a payment link. They can still choose a mailed check from there.

What your vendor sees

For a payment link, your vendor gets an email with an Accept Payment Now button. They verify their phone number with a text code, then pick how to get paid. For a full walkthrough with screenshots, see What Your Vendors See When They Accept a Payment.

Landlines can't get the text code: Ask your vendor for a mobile number and update it on the vendor. If they don't have one, pay by check instead.
